Welcome to the weekly article I like to call “I am not Sheldon Cooper”. Every Saturday, Visually African brings you this post called Fun with African flags. It’s a place where I take an African flag and mash-it-up together with flags from all over the world. Just for fun! If you have ever wondered how international flags would look if they were “Africanised”… then every Saturday, this is the place to be. Wakanda forever!
After the passing away of Chadwick Boseman, who acted in the Marvel universe as the African King of Wakanda. I felt that today’s challenge should revolve around the fictional-national flag of Wakanda. Wakanda being a fictional African country said to be extremely rich in minerals, most notably: vibranium. Which is fictionally acclaimed for its extraordinary abilities to absorb, store, and release large amounts of kinetic energy. As you can imagine, the internet has no shortage of flag designs that people say should be used as the official flag of Wakanda. For the purposes of this article only, we decided to go with the design below:
Before we begin today’s unveiling of the flags, let’s take an official tour of Wakanda. In the concept video below you get to revisit some of Wakanda’s most iconic locations. The same locations that were later used in Black Panther. After which we can start showing today’s flags.
Now that we are all caught up with all that, here are the national flags that we are going to “Africanise” today:
- South Korea
- United States of America
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- United Kingdom
And once again, we have homework! After you’re done reading today’s article, can you try and redesign the Canadian flag using today’s Wakandan flag? Here are the flag mash-ups we did for you today, I hope they leave you intrigued and inspired:
1. South Korea
2. United States of America
3. Bosnia and Herzegovina
5. United Kingdom
Thank you so much for being here! Don’t forget to join me again next week for another installment of “Fun with African flags”. The aim of this weekly blog post is to imagine international flag designs, as seen from an Africanised lense. What could be more fun than that! Don’t forget to try it out yourself with the Canadian flag. Use pencils, crayons, Adobe illustrator or whatever you wish to do the homework and share your design on social media under the hashtag: #Funwithafricanflags
